Volkswagen LT 2001

Overall Rating

3 stars

The Volkswagen LT is VW's offering in the large panel van section. Up against stiff competition it has to justify the higher price tags as they hold there value so well. Large, good design and reliable engines it does tick boxes.

Road Test

Exterior of the LT is fairly un-remarkable, sloping bonnet, large headlights could be describing almost any large panel van in the market. The cab is fairly Spartan but has robust controls and a good quality plastic finish. Driver's seat is comfy with air-cushion for additional padding, the driving position is adjustable via the steering column control. Three point seatbelts for all passengers. Long gear stick floor mounted makes changing gears an effort. ABS as standard. A good quality well built van which is reflected in a higher price than competitors. The steering is nicely weighted and the van turns with minimal body roll. Visibility is good with a tight turning circle and large side mirrors to assist with parking. The cabin can be noisy despite insulation from the road. The LT range consists of three wheelbases and two roof-heights for the panel vans, along with window-van, chassis-cab and double-cab derivatives. A variety of combinations with a further choice of engine options. Two basic power plants are available a 2.5TDi and a 2.8TDi which can be selected with differing power outputs. The 2.5-litre engine uses the direct injection configuration favoured in VW passenger cars while the 2.8-litre option features more advanced common-rail technology. Both power plants provide impressive economy and useful performance, the 2.5 TDi averaging 30mpg depending on carrying load. The naming of models is derived from the gross vehicle weight so buyers can decide on which van based on their carrying needs. The 2.8 litre common-rail diesel is one of the most powerful engines in its sector.

Verdict

A quality van allowing buyers to choose across a large range and specify their requirements. Excellent engine power with one of the most powerful on the market in its sector. Not the cheapest option in the large panel van arena as a used van as VW's hold there price so well.
