Road Test
The Caddy is without question a substantial van. Starting life as a hi-cube van back in 1996 and based on the Polo it was almost identical to the car at the front with a big square box on the back for carrying. Style has evolved and the look is now much more streamlined and integrated with the cabin and load space flowing as one and now getting inspiration from the Golf although it doesn't look like a Golf car, the Caddy is now it's own van with it's own identity. Inside the Caddy is simple and un-fussy with dark grey plastic interior, good storage in the glove box, dash-top trays and door pockets as well as a long shelf above the windscreen. ABS is standard.
Previous Caddy's had a 2.9m3 load space which has been increased by 2m3 with a payload capacity of just over 800kg is on a par with direct competitors but the Caddy has the edge on towing with potential of a braked trailer of up to 1,500kg, rare in this type of van. With gross vehicle weights between 2,205kg and 2,235kg, it's a much heavier vehicle making the towing possible and giving the sturdy feeling. The van drives well but with its weight it's not cruising at top speed but has enough power to hold its own.
The engines are both diesel; an SDi unit and a high-tech Volkswagen direct injection TDi. The 68bhp SDi discharges a maximum of 103lb/ft of torque at 2,400rpm but it's the TDis 184lb/ft at 1,900rpm. Fuel economy is the same with both engines between 44-46mpg. If you have the luxury of choice go for the TDi especially if you are looking to tow regularly.
Volkswagen's retain their prices particularly well so it's often hard to find a bargain, this may be one of the deciding factors against buying a Caddy but it is well worth a look and if you tow regularly the extra might be worth it.
Verdict
A strong solid van that has improved in looks with age. Excellent towing vehicle. Not the cheapest option in the market as VW's hold there price so well. '
