Vauxhall Vivaro (2001-06) 2001-

Overall Rating

4 stars

Vivaro has won Vauxhall several awards over the years, most notably the "Commercial Motors testers' choice" for 2004 and 2005. With great engines to choose from, a car like drive, and a comfortable cabin, it's easy to see why. We would, however, like to see more electrics offered as standard, and aren't overly fond of the futuristic styling.

Road Test

Vauxhall describes the Vivaro as a 'jumbo roof' which gives the extra head space in the cabin, and it certainly is roomy. The seats are comfortable, and visibility is good with large side windows. Both the drivers seat and steering column have plenty of room to adjusting to suit height. Large front and rear bumpers, along with a solid body and long wheelbase, maximize the appeal of this solid van. There are four engine choices with Vivaro, one petrol engine and three turbo-diesels; 1.9 Di 80bhp, 1.9 DT1 110 bhp, and the 2.5 16v 133 bhp (which launched to years later). The turbo-diesels all use a common rail injection system, which makes this van very quick at the lights, and unusually fast for a van of its size. The six-speed gearbox also gives great fuel consumption, with Vauxhall publishing consumption at between 35-38 mpg depending on diesel model. The 120bhp 2.0 16v petrol engine is no slouch either reaching 62 mph in just 12.6 seconds, and with an attractive 29.1 mpg. Available in long and short wheel base models, there are choices of rear doors, and sliding side doors, so look out for these if buying used. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) are standard, but emergency brake assist (EBA) are only standard on the 2.5. Given the speed of this van, it is worth looking out for vans with the EBA option. Other optional extras include heated seats, electric windows, and air con. Vauxhall recommend service at 18,000 miles or two yearly intervals, and have a generous six-year anti-perforation guarantee on the body panels. There is also a three-year warranty of up to 100,000 miles, adding value for money when buying new, but worth remembering if you're looking for a young used model. Vivaro is also available in a minibus option, with two rows of three seats behind the driver and front passenger, it seats comfortably. There is an extra set of windows for the first row of passengers, but only ventilation outlets for the third row of seats.

Verdict

A fantastic drive, even with heavy load. Great driver and passenger comfort.
