Vauxhall Combo (1999-) 1999-

Overall Rating

4 stars

Although Vauxhall do a separate Corsa van, from the front, it looks like a Corsa, and the cabin is much similar to the car too, it just has extra space in the rear. Seating 5 comfortably, and with good load capacity, this is an attractive van for those who want a light commercial.

Road Test

Within the car like cabin, there is a disappointing lack of storage space, and no cupholders, but that's about the only downside to the interior of the van, as the rear load space is very good and easily accessible. The drive was smooth and the car is happy to cruise in gears, but the steering felt a little too light in wet conditions. As with all panel vans the rear visibility is poor if you are used to a car, and it is worth paying the extra for glazed rear doors. Vauxhall offer four engines, all with 5 speed gear boxes. The first is a 1.6 litre petrol engine with a consumption figure of 30 mpg. There are two direct-injection turbo-diesels, 1.7 DTi?s with bhp of 65 and 75, and figures of 40mpg. Lastly a more environmentally focused Duelfuel 1.6, which offers really good economy on running costs. Although it is a little over £2,000 more than the other models new, at 50% more miles to the gallon than the DTi's, the initial outlay should be re-couped in no time at all. The load space behind the seats is 2.8 cubic metres, and they fold down to almost flat, to increase the space. The load platform is 1.78 metres long, and 1.35 metres wide. The double rear opening doors makes loading light work, and there is an option of sliding doors. The seating space in the back feels comfortable, and leg room is ample. Apart from side windows, this could be a more roomy estate, rather than a small van. All Combo's weigh less than 2000kg, which means that they can be driven legally at car speeds, rather than the reduced speeds of larger, heavier vans. Standard equipment comprises of ABS, brake assist, driver and passenger airbags, and a wear indicator signals when brake pads need changing. Options include side passenger airbags, sat-nav, air-con, metallic paint, nearside loading door and CD player. Vauxhall recommend servicing at every 20,000 miles or 12 months

Verdict

Very good space if you are on a budget. Spend the extra on the Duelfuel engine and save it back.
