Astra Van is designed for those who rate comfort and drive, above load space. This is the fifth generation model, with the first launched in 1983 and it is still going strong. Other manufacturers seem to be losing interest in car based vans, so Astra is increasingly finding itself as the biggest fish in the pond.

This van is basically a modified version of the Vauxhall Astra estate. It only seats the driver and passenger, so the load area is directly behind the seats. Driving position is similar to a car, and the interior of the cabin is far superior to other vans because of its car beginnings. The drive is very smooth and can really only be compared to a car, however, there is some engine and road noise from the rear, which can be annoying on longer journeys. Vauxhall offer three diesel and one petrol engine. The 1.4 litre petrol engine only has a 5 speed gear box option, while the diesels have five or six speed gear boxes. The three direct-injection turbo-diesels are the 1.3 litre, which should be ample for most drivers, the 1.7 and a 1.9 litre. There is also and auto transmission option on the 1.9 engine. The 1.4 petrol and 1.3 diesel both offer 90bhp, whilst the 1.7 and 1.9 give figures of 100 and 120bhp respectively. This latest model has a longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs than previous models, which have made for better handling, and extra interior space. The load area is totally flat, and is 1.78m long by 0.9m high, and it takes a maximum of 650kg. But this is a van for people that don't really want to drive a van, so you can't really expect more space. There are also six handy lashing points in the back, which allow you to easily secure objects in place. The entry level Club has electric windows, body coloured bumpers, ABS, brake assist, twin front airbags, and a CD player. Sportive adds air-con, sports seats, and many more finishing touches like body coloured mirrors and door handles, and 16 inch structure wheels. Security measures offered as standard are remote central deadlocks, tamper-proof door locks, and you can add a perimeteric alarm system and solid rear tailgate. You can also add roof rails and a flexible bulkhead to the Club model.
