Improvements have been made to the latest version of the Suzuki Carry, the popular small van made for carrying light loads around town. It's compact and nips through traffic and tight spaces with ease and is larger inside than it looks.
For
- Cost effective
- Easy access for loading
- Good in tight spaces
Against
Road Test
A sculpted bonnet, large bumper and flat side panels with a sliding door providing easy access for loading. Underneath is a useful storage area running the full width of the Carry, perfect for keeping tools out of sight. The cabin has a good level of comfort for a budget commercial vehicle. A good quality stereo, central locking on all five doors, a drivers airbag, heated rear window and a good selection of storage spaces including a large, built-in storage tray and electric power steering. Although this vehicle is harder to drive at speed and in adverse weather conditions as the steering is so light it feels like you are getting blown around the road. Access is good with five doors all opening wide to make light work of loading. However, unlike many car-derived machines, the purpose built Carry boasts an impressively large load with a load deck of 1,620mm long, 1,340mm wide and 1,100mm high with a 577kg payload.
The Suzuki Carry fits into the criteria where a driver needs more than a car but not a conventional van. Available as a fuel injected 1.3 petrol engine, 16v in the form of the Carry Van and also the Carry Dropside Pick-Up. Acceleration and cruising abilities are respectable due to the proven power plant and five-speed manual gearbox, but this is not a long distance vehicle so be clear on what you are looking to achieve. The engine can be noisy
The Suzuki Carry is well priced and is a serious contender between basic car-derived vans and small panel vans and is just £6895 + vat at new so second hand prices could force some real bargains. The Carry won't appeal to everyone its strengths are in its versatile way to move goods and the ability to manoeuvre around tight spaces in towns. Ideal professions are florists, take away drivers and any delivery company that wants to get somewhere reasonably quickly and easy with their light load.
Verdict
A cost effective option to the small business user looking for a bit more space and an agile mover that will zip around town. This is not a long distance vehicle and can be noisy.
