Road Test

The Peugeot Expert, since its 1995 has faced revisions and enhancements to keep up with the big boys in the competitive sector of the small panel van sector. The Experts distinctive wedge-shape has been re-shaped and the bumper deepened to give a more pleasing look with a new grille, larger headlamps and prominent Peugeots lion. Rubbing strips have been added to help protect bodywork. Improvements to specification and interior comfort with the seats re-designed and raised for a higher driving position, all now get three-point safety belts and a driver's airbag. A writing surface with built-in cup holders can be folded down from the centre seat a large overhead shelf for stowage. Steps have also been taken to reduce noise and vibration in the cab, making for a more pleasant driving environment. The Expert range has two diesel engine options, the 2.0-litre HDi and a less cutting-edge 1.9D, along with two panel van payload categories and the Combi minibus. The different payload options are necessitated by the different power outputs available from the two engines. Therefore, the 71bhp 1.9-litre powers the 815kg Expert and the 110bhp 2.0-litre HDi takes care of business in the heavier duty 900kg version. Gross vehicle weights are 2.2t and 2.3t respectively, while the load volume is 4 cubic meters whichever model you choose. Access to this load space is through two sliding side doors or by the hinged double doors at the back. The 1.9D is a perfectly fine engine, especially if you never carry too heavy a load it's just considerably less technologically modern than the HDi but does cost less. However, the HDi also benefits from an average fuel consumption of 43mpg compared to 36mpg from the 1.9D, something to bear in mind when choosing between the two models.

Verdict

Interior and exterior improvements are keeping the Expert fresh looking and modern. A cost effective option in the small panel van sector and excellent fuel economy with HDi engines.
