Road Test
First launched 10 years ago as with all commercials the Boxer has been improved over time. Anyone familiar with the old Boxer will notice a few important changes in the new model but the most beneficial alterations you can't see in quality and robustness. For exterior protection there have been additional coats of paint and an improved interior. At first it the exterior doesn't look any different but there is a large diverse range of derivatives allowing customers to specify the combination of wheelbase and load volume that best suits them. The variations are worth weighing up, if you want to get best for your business.
The cabin is comfortable with adjustable seats. There are handy armrests and the cabin is light with an airy feel. Standard equipment is generous, with electric windows, electric and heated door mirrors, central locking and a radio/CD player welcome additions to all models except the budget 250 SWB. The gear lever is dashboard-mounted and connected to a 5-speed gearbox. The shift is easy and the position frees up some valuable floor space, helping cross-cabin manoeuvrability.
Four basic models to choose from; the 250, 290, 330 and 350. Helpfully, these numbers refer to the gross vehicle weights as in 2.5, 2.9, 3.3 and 3.5 ton. Once you have decided on your engine size there are short, medium, long and extra-long wheelbases, standard, high and extra-high roofs, as well as the chassis cab. Boxer buyers can choose between petrol and diesel. The 2.0-litre petrol engine gives 110bhp and is only available in the 290 version. The most popular are the 2.0, 2.2 and 2.8 litre HDi common rail diesels, the diesel range offering a decent duel economy.
Sound proofing around the vehicle has enhanced the driving experience by reducing vibration and absorbing the noise.
Verdict
A cost effective option with a choice of petrol or common-rail diesel engines. Above average level of equipment. Enhanced cabin features make for a better more spacious driving environment.
