No longer in production the Nissan Vanette is an interesting looking van that Scooby Doo would be happy in. Quirky it is ideal to be customized especially the window van and used as a traveling companion. Outdated in looks and style.
- Cheap van
- Reasonable size engine
- Good load space
- Outdated style, no longer in production
- Low on overtaking power
Not a lot of space inside. There are no refinements like cup holders, although there is a flat bit on the front of the dash for cans, but its not big enough for a flask. The exterior is dated and the funny shape will be an acquired taste. There's plenty of room in the back and holds one ton in weight with twin-sliding doors as standard on all models.
Three models, two 5 door cargo panel vans with 2.3 diesel engines - one a base model and one E trim. Concluding the trio is a window van with the same 2.3 diesel engine. The 2.3 diesel engine is very noisy, it is unbearable at 50mph, go on the motorway and it is impossible to have a conversation. Driving even small hills are a challenge in the Vanette, if you hit a hill with a full load, the speedo flies round to the left and before you know it you are only doing about 20. It is impossible to overtake too, even on a straight, flat road and if you are trying to get past a tractor. You drop a gear, pull out, drop another gear, drop another gear, pray, then it reaches its limit so you change up and it gets bogged down. Even pulling away from traffic lights is difficult. Using the gears is a work of art first and second work, third gear gets bogged down, and fourth and fifth are almost the same. Best thing to do is to get plenty of revs up in second gear and then change to third. Ride is awful, even going over a white line in the middle of the road causes movements in the back of the van.
Maintaining your Vanette takes knowledge, to check the oil you need to go under the seats rather than the bottom. Same method to fill the windscreen washers.
This van is cheap and honest and does most of what you ask it too.
A cheap and cheerful van. No longer in production so check the cost of spares. Driving is a challenge but has good space in rear.
