Mitsubishi Pinin Van 2002 - 2004

Overall Rating

3 stars

Looks like a car without rear side windows but this van has the capacity of most small vans in the market. Reliable, versatile and it won't be suited to all trades but if you want a compact van this may be the answer.

Road Test

This model was designed precisely for the European market and designed by Pininfarina from where it got its name. Chunky but smart looking, the suspension of the Pinin is smooth the body rolls slightly just to remind you that you're in a 4x4. Inside, there's nothing remarkable about the layout which is clear and plastic. Passenger space is tight literally because the van is only 3735mm long and 1695mm wide. However, the seats are comfortable and offer a good level of support. This van is a small compact carrying tool and that is the key, it will be ideally suited to florists, painters and tradesmen. The Shogun Pinin van is available in versions derived from the three-door or five-door models of the base car but don't expect the same payload capacities expected from a conventional small van. The load area in the 3-door has only 987 litres (34.8 cu. ft) of space and is able to carry a modest 425kg in weight. Additional load capacity depends on you being able to tow a trailer carrying up to 1,500kg (3,307lbs).The five-door has a 1,770 litre capacity (62 cu. ft) and a 500kg weight limit. This is a small, trendy and manoeuvrable van. The vehicles key attractions are the same as those of the car version of this design. Namely, the selectable high tech SS4-i 4WD system, MPI/GDi petrol engine technology, there's no diesel option. The Shogun Pinin van should suit the urban environment with its 9.8 metre turning circle and 10.4m for the longer 5-door. Both manual and automatic models come fitted with either the 1.8 MPI or the 2.0-litre GDi petrol engines, the 2.0 litre can only be specified in 5-door derivatives. Both engines are compliant with phase three of the European emission regulations. Residual values are good and demand has increased for this type of vehicle so bagging a bargain may be difficult if you find this vehicle does the fit the bill.

Verdict

Small compact carrying vehicle which is fairly specialized to certain trades. Load space is less than other small vans on the market but the Pinin is nimble and stylish and suited to urban work.
