Road Test
The Mercedes Sprinters appeal is tough; popular with fleet operators who have the confidence this van will do the job with the minimum of fuss. Adjustable driver seat with plenty of room the simple cab design has cubby holes for storage space. The controls are easy to reach on the centre console and the gear change is easy. Full-size airbags for driver and passenger are standard and there are optional window bags for added side-impact protection.
The Sprinter has consistently proven itself able to stand-up to rough treatment cementing its popularity. The Sprinter range is available in two roof heights; standard and high with a choice of wheelbase lengths; 3,000mm, 3,550mm and the 4,025mm wheelbase only available in high roof. The actual naming is more complicated and it works according to their permitted gross vehicle weight and the bhp output rating of the engine installed. For instance, the entry-level 208CDI has a 2,590kg gvw and a CDI diesel engine rated at 82bhp. Confusing? It does take some thinking about it but once you've mastered the rule it gets easier to work out. Also the panel van models are supplemented by Sprinter minibus, crew bus, pick-up, crew cab, tipper, chassis cab and box van models.
The Sprinters biggest strength is its engines and attracts buyers with the CDI common-rail direct injection. A 4-valve per cylinder configuration and exhaust gas turbo charging with an air intercooler these engines are cutting edge and it shows. Distance is no problem and the Sprinter loves cruising at higher speeds, its quiet engine and minimum vibration makes this van a joy to drive. For urban driving and manoeuvrability pick your model carefully as the smaller designs are more agile.
Verdict
For the combination of ride, performance and handling the Sprinter would be hard to beat but you get what you pay for and Mercedes will always be pricier than there competitors.
