Average. Tough as old boots and genuinely competent in the mud, the Discovery encapsulates Land Rover's core brand values. Off road it's the business and does the job but on road it is left behind by rivals.
For

Road Test
Land Rover is still one of the most powerful automotive brands there is, and the mighty Discovery is more than worthy of the badge. It is big, handsome and rugged. Also limited in use. It's predictably great off-road, but lacks refinement on tarmac. Not suitable for long distance or any long periods on the road, although top speed is detailed as 90mph the ride is shaky at this level.. Inside is basic with poor storage and no-frills. Build quality is patchy and bodywork is prone to rust. It's a big vehicle and seating is in a commanding position so visibility is good and tackling narrow roads is not as daunting as first though. Mirrors are big, you can see where the bonnet ends reversing a harder in the van version as the back is enclosed at the sides. Steering is light so it's easy to drive but the handbrake is a bit heavy. Twin airbags are standard although you will feel safe and protected in this huge cavern of metal.
All models are available as 3 door 2.5 diesels with the choice of TD5 or TDi. The 136 bhp turbo diesel engine produces 220 lb/ft of torque at just 1950 rpm (boosted to 250 lb/ft for the auto) essential for riding up those hills. Choice of transmissions with manual gearbox that is fine as long as you don't try and rush the gear changes and a smooth automatic gearbox. The TD5 turbo diesel engine is coarse, slow and relatively thirsty with an average of 25 mpg with no load and on-road.
Prices reflect the Land Rover brand rather the model itself so be prepared to pay high in comparison to competitors if you like the Land Rover brand. Would suit only a certain type of business user so it is very clear to dismiss this vehicle if it doesn't fit your needs or decide if the Land Rover Discovery is your perfect partner. Look carefully at purchase cost, time spent on road versus off and fuel economy.
Verdict
A big tough 4x4 perfect for off road activities. Not so good for on road. Can suffer from poor build quality but drivers seem not to mind as long as it hold the Land Rover badge.
