Pick-ups have been popular in the States for some time and the craze has well and truly taken a hold here in the UK. Style and practicality is the key, and the Isuzu Rodeo has long been the UK's favourite.

Road Test
Two specs the Max package does not get you much of extra value over the standard Rodeo Denver model (except SmartNav the sassy new sat nav system) in practical terms but it does enhance your vehicles appearance and in this is sector appearance is important. A Rodeo Max features a front A-Bar with a chrome insert that hangs below the heavily chromed grille. Stainless steel side steps between the wheel arches make the Rodeo Max look lower than conventional models. Chrome lamp protectors surround the rear light clusters and a big shiny chrome bumper. Safety equipment is across the Rodeo range with ABS, EBD, two front airbags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners and three-point belts throughout. Standard models also get a radio CD player, immobiliser and four speed wipers.
The Denver Max also offers electric mirrors, fog lamps, keyless entry, a six-speaker sound system and air-conditioning, along with optional four-speed automatic transmission.
The 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine is the best option and by pick-up standards the engine is smooth and fairly quiet. Isuzu's Rodeo Denver Max is available exclusively as double cab with a choice of the Rodeos two engine options the 2.5 and 3.0-litre turbo diesels with a 131bhp maximum power output. Choice of manual or automatic. This pulling power is fantastic when travelling off road or hauling. The payload limit of 1,055kg but it will actually pull a braked trailer weighing up to a massive 3,000kg. Economically the average fuel consumption is over 30mpg with out towing.
Drives well and holds the road but tends to bounce along and body roll. The Rodeo has always been up with the top UK pick-up choices some although competition is now getting tough and there are better pick-ups for quality and driving. For low prices, strong good looks and strong good equipment level the Denver Max models are still a serious contender.
Launching end of March 2007 for sale in April is a 2.5 common-rail diesel which I am told will be much quieter, smoother and economical with an extensive facelift including new front and leather seats.
Verdict
King of the road in the pick-up market with its strong good looks and high payload.
