Designed along the Ford Transit range the Ford Connect is a new short wheelbase model for additional durability in the small van market. The successor to the popular but un-inspiring Escort and Courier, Ford has gone back to the drawing board resulting in the new Connect.

The Ford SWB Transit Connect provides class-leading levels of durability through the use of high-strength steels and heavy-duty components. Front and rear anti-roll bars, together with 15-inch, five-stud wheels, double skin sheet metal panels, and suspension components that are strengthened for maxim durability, making industrial strength accessible to the small van customer. The body sides have been designed to maximise the usable cube, while rear doors open wide for easy access to the boxy load area. Single or twin slide doors are available on the van, providing a flexible solution to all your loading needs. Security conscious the key-locking bonnet and a shield protected 'lock-in-latch' mechanism and immobiliser the transit connect delivers maximum protection, drivers airbag and anti-lock brakes as standard. The cabin is functional with adjustable driver's seat, heating system and some storage touches of pen and coin holders.
Ford has produced small and medium-sized versions of the Transit Connect, as well as the 5-seater Torneo Connect. The short wheelbase/low-roof derivative will square up to the competition. The long wheelbase/high-roof has a maximum capacity of 900kg. Should you need a bit more by way of choice; the SWB model can be upgraded to carry 825kg. The passenger seat folds flat to allow for additional storage. Instead of the separate cabin and load areas, the Connect has gone for the one-box Transit route. ABS is not available in the entry-level model unless you want to pay more and traction control system is optional on all models.
Available in two engine configurations the 1.8 TDCI configuration with its high-pressure common-rail fuel injection technology is powerful and economical with the TDCI managing 37mpg on the combined cycle. The Entry-level diesel option a 74bhp 1.8-litre TDdi engine produces the Connects best combined economy with almost 39mpg. The range-topping option is a 109bhp version of the TDCi powerplant a strong feeling engines in a class of its own.
Verdict
A small van with state of the art technology under the bonnet. Choice of wheelbases to maximize payload with more carrying capacity than any other van in its class.
