Ford Ka Van 2002 -

Overall Rating

2 stars

The Ka van is the van version of the small Ka car. Bridging the gap between a car and small panel van like the Transit Connect, it's hard to believe but the Ka van has filled a hole and is probably far more popular than anyone expected.

Road Test

Practical and well designed layout but it does look unusual. It is very comfortable for a small van and roomy even for taller people. Ford forgot about storage space though. Standard equipment includes power steering, an immobiliser, a heated rear window with wash/wipe and a stereo cassette player. The Ka van offers all its drivers an airbag, inertia reel seatbelts and side impact protection beams. The interior is the same as the Ka car with it's curved dash. Turning small cars into vans where business users want to move goods from place to place quickly, efficiently and economically is no easy task. The Ka van range is one engine; a 1.3-litre petrol and one trim level. The 1.3-litre 8-valve, SOHC engine that powers the Ka van is a vast improvement over the 1.3-litre Endura E that powered all the early Ka models. More responsive and refined giving an gililty drivers will like. Combined fuel consumption of close to 50mpg is economical. Suited for urban driving, there is no need to worry about tight spaces with the 9.9 metre turning circle. For carrying capacity the Ka van manages a 300kg maximum payload in a load bay with a 724-litre volume. 300kg is the smallest maximum payload in any mainstream UK market van. The Ka vans load bay is sectioned-off from the rest of the cabin by a half-height steel bulkhead topped off with a mesh grille allowing some rear visibility. So it's the smallest payload van, it's the Ka car with the back seats taken out, so what is the appeal of the Ka van? As a business opportunity it's cheaper to buy and tax as a commercial vehicle. If you don't need to carry large loads the Ka van is good in urban traffic and for getting around in small places.

Verdict

Van version of the popular Ka car. Will not suit everyone down to it's size, but if small is what you are looking for the Ka van has good mpg is nimble around town and great in confined spaces.
