Road Test
Outward looks are the same as the Fiesta car. Inside it does feel like a van with the high ceiling and upright driving position. Durable interior. The rear load bay has been given some thought and a solid half-height bulkhead to protect the driver and passenger from any loads with an optional mesh upper section. The floor is covered by a sturdy rubber mat and four load lashing points to secure any load. Maximum payload is 494kg and the space afforded items in the back is fractionally over one cubic meter. The Fiestas interior space means that you get a lot of room inside for a supermini-derived van. Remote central double locking, an immobiliser and an optional perimeter alarm help protect any load while left. The fuel filler cap is lockable and anti-theft coded audio equipment, twin dual stage front airbags and ABS as standard.
There are two options, a 1.4-litre TDCi diesel and the Fords 1.3-litre Duratec petrol unit. Good torque, low fuel consumption and excellent construction of a good oil-burner but the petrol option is likely to find favour with those seeking a vehicle for conversion to ultra-economical LPG. Buyers going for the petrol option will get their return in the shape of 70bhp. The engine is Euro4 compliant and fuel consumption of 45mpg. The diesel option or 1.4-litre Duratorq TDCi is a second generation engine of the common-rail fuel injection school with a combined fuel economy of 65.7mpg. On cost saving the insurance for the Fiesta van is 1E, the lowest possible group. The diesel is a much better option and lively, comfortable drive with stop-start urban motoring requiring far less gearbox action than in the petrol model. The diesel is not much noisier than the petrol version. Best suited to urban driving this van is agile and has a turning circle of 9.8 metres.
The supermini van market is small and niche and will suit business's who need some flat load space with the manoeuvrability of a small van. There are arguments for and against buying a supermini and folding down the seats but at least we have the choice and the Fiesta van could be just what you need.
Verdict
Van version of the popular Fiesta car. Will not suit everyone down to its size, but if small is what you are looking for the Fiesta Van has very good running costs with excellent mpg, especially diesel model and lowest insurance group.
