Fiat Punto Van 1999 -

Overall Rating

3 stars

On earlier models the van version of the Fiat Punto has skipped the cars style tweaks which Fiat have addressed with upgrades. Early models un-economical but vast improvements with 1.3 litre Multijet engine. Good load space which has been increased even further.

Road Test

Manoeuvring in tight spaces has been eased by the introduction of standard fitment of Dual drive electronic power steering which, at the touch of the 'City' button on the dashboard, reduces to a minimum the effort needed to steer the vehicle in later models. The steering wheel is height-adjustable, and driver safety is enhanced by the provision of an airbag. Steel panels in place of the car's original rear side windows. Dividing the load space from the driver's compartment is a solid tubular frame with sheet metal lower half and plastic grille above, providing the occupants with complete protection from possible load movement. Equipped with a five speed gearbox, Punto Van offers a choice of diesel - 1.7, 1.9 and 19TD or petrol power - 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3, both 4-cylinder engines providing a top speed of 96mph. Not particularly economical in early versions Fiat have tried to address this by fitting an active detonation sensor for improved management of spark advance under all conditions in the 1.3 model. The options available don't make this van the fastest but should be enough for most van drivers, where possible opt for the diesel versions. Load capacity varies from 450 kg to 510 kg. Internal height has been increased to 940 mm, and overall dimensions are up in length to 3800 mm and 35 mm in width (1660 mm). The load compartment is 1300 mm long at its maximum, 1370 mm wide (1075 mm minimum), and 950 mm at maximum height. New Punto Van's standard specification also includes the Fiat CODE immobiliser system, security window etching, analogue clock, a load area roof light and a stereo radio cassette. Options include Blaupunkt radio/CD and satellite navigator, electric windows, central door locking, electronic alarm, climate control, ABS, passenger and side airbags, and a loading bay cover.

Verdict

It's the 1.3-litre Multijet engine that has propelled the Punto van from any old supermini-based commercial vehicle to a genuine contender at the top of the small van market. It's as good as or better than anything you can get in other small vans.
