No longer in production the out-dated Hi-Jet is being replaced with the new Extol. Parts are expensive and will get more although local scrap yards will be a good bet as Hi-jets are scrapped for parts only. A bumpy ride especially in the back.
For
- Economical

Road Test
Hi-jets come in three different models - pick ups, tippers and the micro vans. All are 1.3 litre engines mainly 1.3i's with a couple of exceptions of 1.3 litres and the tipper and micro vans come in LPG versions. Fairly economical due to small engine and survives well on long journeys as well as around town, although not the gutsiest vehicle especially depending on what you are carrying in the back and how high the hills you need to go up are.
Not all models have power steering so watch carefully on what you are buying. This ride is not smooth and can be very bumpy especially in the back. Good vision with no bonnet or boot makes parking easy.
A reasonable amount of space in the 6 seater versions with the back and middle seats folding flat and when seats up enough room to put suitcase or holdall behind the back seat. There is also additional space under the seats for extra storage.
Repair costs can be higher than average as parts can only be purchased from Daihatsu which are very expensive, check out your local scrap dealers to see if there are any quality second hand parts around. If windows get broken the whole unit needs to be replaced.
The low emissions make this van environmentally friendly although there is no benefit taxation wise as it doesn't apply to commercial vehicles. Prices are coming down so if you are prepared to drive around in this not-pretty outdated vehicle then you can pick up some decent buys, just be mindful of repairs and re-sale value.
Verdict
Outdated van no longer in production. Economical but can be gutless so really needs consideration on what will be carried in the back. Expensive to repair.
