Fourtrak is tough and a true off-roader, close in character to the Defender. It's cheap and does the job, but there are better choices if you put comfort before practicality.
For
- Long-lived 2.8 turbo diesel engine
- Well constructed and very durable
- Very respectable off-road abilities
Against
- A very old design, and it looks it
- Lacks comfort and refinement
- Limited appeal
Road Test
Fourtrak is over twenty years old and although there has been improvements over the years this solid, sturdy van is pretty much still the same. That it lasted so long is a testament to its rugged character. The Fourtrak Fieldman is a true off-roader and its natural habitat is up a hillside with a couple of sheep in the back. Refined it isn't but then it doesn?t pretend to be. Unlike lightweight 'leisure' compact 4x4s, it's a fully-fledged off-roader, with minimal overhang, good ground clearance and bags of torque. Inside is basic with hard wearing seats and plastic dash, no-frills is the name.
An uprated 2.8 engine there is just one model - the 3 door 2.8 diesel, L trim 4x4. Fourtrak's reliable, it can take a lot of punishment and it doesn't pretend to be sophisticated. The Fourtrak is not a relaxing long-distance drive, with a hard ride, lots of body roll, lousy acceleration and high noise levels. Servicing is straightforward, insurance is only Group 8, and 30mpg is possible.
The Fourtrak Fieldman is still popular in the used van market but be careful what you are buying and find out as much information as you can on what the vehicle has been used for as although reliable and sturdy excessive off-road driving can have a toll on the suspension. The Fieldman is excellent at towing. If you want a strong workhorse and aren't interested in the frill the Fieldman is a niche vehicle and suits farmers and the like perfectly.
Verdict
A niche 4x4 ideally suited to farmers or anyone who spends their life half way up a hill or extensively off-road where the Fieldman is in its element. If you are looking for lots of road driving and especially distance then this may not be for you. An easy decision as to wether the Fieldman suits your needs.
