V70 D5 S (2004 model)

I've owned this car for almost two years and have no cause for any complaints. I have owned on whole about four Volvos and found them all very reliable. Also the build quality is fine with no rattles to complain about. What I will agree with is that a car of this size and class the legroom leaves a lot to be desired about. Good service backup from my main dealer; the problems could lie in other dealers not caring about their customers.

This car is very expensive to maintain. The car has about 100,000 miles on it and to date it has cost over £4500 in repairs. I had a 1991 740 estate and loved it. I do not think Volvo is the car it used to be and would keep clear of their products in future.

This, a v70 d5 is my fifth Volvo and second diesel model after a VW engined 940 and is a revelation. Less interior space but the handling is very good and the consumption better than 45 mpg outstanding. Bought as a high mileage ex company car and worth every penny.

V70 D5 S 2004
Frustrated Volvo Owner
Overall Rating | |
I am really disappointed with this Volvo, my first for 7 years. It is shoddily built, very noisy, slow and ponderous. It weighs a lot so you can't expect sportscar handling, but you do expect the front wheels to appear connected to the steering wheel. Braking is also mediocre.
Fuel consumption is dire: you might expect sub 30mpg from a performance petrol-engined car but not from an allegedly economical diesel.
The car is full of small and intermittent problems, mainly electrical. The climate control and fuel computer work when they feel like it. The stereo sounds like it cost £10. At six months old it is easier to say which bits of trim do not rattle.
Loading is also very badly thought out, surprising for a Volvo. There is no extensive flat loading area, even though the front seat folds flat because the folded rear seat squab gets in the way.
You can spend the money on much better cars.

Well I'm on my second Volvo I previously had a 1999 S40 SE, Which was a loverly car but again had some of those niggly problems but was okay for what we paid. However we just bought a second hand V70 2.4 Auto SE, and in the 6 weeks we've had it we have had numerous faults pop up (fortunatley under warranty) it's covered 95K miles so it's not a fresh car but still has a full service history and has been cared for.
Having been someone who has owned Toyota's all my life and fancied a switch, It's no were near as reliable to own as any of my toyota's have been and they were older cars, but It is a much nicer car to drive than the toyota's, and as someone that suffers from back problems I can go half way accross the country and still feel refreshed when I arrive. I'ts a nice quiet motorway car, but is a little thirsty.
The engine itself is very good and I have no doubt that in it's self is very reliable, but it's all the electronics that run it that seem to be troublesome, you can quickly find (in my limited experience) that the faults can get on top of you if you don't keep it up to scratch....I'm hoping once all the niggly problems are sorted with my V70 that we will have some trouble free motoring for a while.
I find the driving experience is worth the effort, especialy as I have 2 kids in the back.
My advice would be to get someone who has a good knowledge of volvo's to acompany you before your purchase.
If I get 2 or 3 years out of this car without any mechanical problems I'll be happy.

Well, this is my second diesel V70 in a row. I traded in my much-loved old-shape model for this one, and while I don't think it's quite as well made as the old car, it's still a fine motor vehicle. Both cars were purchased second hand, this one at 3yrs / 26k miles. Positives : image, looks, space, comfort, value, equipment, quality, performance. Negatives : devours light bulbs, alloys bubbling prematurely, tyre wear. Overall, highly recommended -only a BMW 530d Touring could tempt me away.

Whilst I can not fault the car for what it is designed to be - a family estate that eats up miles in real comfort - the servicing by Volvo after the 3 year warranty and the customer service throughout isn't worth the paper it is written on. It is very expensive for what you get - I expected to pay more for servicing with a Volvo dealership because I expected a job well done - but when they changed a none faulty clutch to fix a faulty bearing after only 53,000 miles and charged me an arm and a leg,to return the car with grease and oil over the inside - I wished I hadn't bothered. What's worse is not only are the Volvo franchises not interested after warranty, but neither is Volvo UK. Such a shame when they have such a good product. The British buying public are not stupid!! Come on Volvo sort your act out

Woefully bad, poorly built and unreliable. Noisy and unresponsive engine and lacklustre handling. Extremely thirsty.
Inadequate dealer support, tenth time fix seems to be regarded as the norm. Volvo customer support very unhelpful.
