What a waste! I read the reviews thats promised near alchemy so I gave it a try. Thank God I rented one for a week before buying.
Dont be fooled, build quality is shoddy. Yes, yes it looks well made, but give it a couple of years and you will be left with a pile of rubbish unless you cosset it with kid gloves. The plastic scratches dead easy. The central locking messed up and the noise from the standard stereo was something from twenty years ago.
Handling was laughably awful, ride comfort minimal.
So the one saving grace is the way it looks, er no, it is probably the most boring looking golf ever.
Oh dear Volkwagen!

Overall a great car. I have run my 'new' Golf for 1000 miles now with no reliability or quality issues. I went for the optional 18' wheels and I'm pleased I did - the ride is good and they really suit the car, so they're well worth the extra £400. The manual gearbox is nice to use - cost prevented me from choosing the DSG but I'm pleased I didn't now.
A great all-rounder, quick enough, fun to drive and very refined.

I could bore you with how I waited 6 months for the car as the dealer "forgot" to order it for 2 months after I had. The same dealer that "forgot" to order it with cruise control and had to retro-fit it.
It's my first VW, and though we've only lived together for 3 weeks, I suspect it will be my last. With extras, this machine cost £25,100, but it simply doesn't feel like it. The electric fold-out mirrors don't (been back twice already for repair - still don't work and there will apparently be a recall, as it's a common problem).
The wipers were so noisy and blurry, they had to be replaced.
The leather seats creak like old armchairs, the remote hatch opener doesn't work (and is a stupid design) and the wheel hubs are going badly rusty already ("They're designed to, Sir").
Despite numerous storage bins (and extra-cost central armrest/box), nothing is shaped for CDs. The instruments look nice in blue but are far too fussy, and sunk too deep into their binnacles. The rain-sensitive wipers are a total pain (if I want intermittent, I don't want the bloody computer over-ruling me!). The "one-touch = 3 blinks" indicators are downright dangerous (you cannot make a mistake).
The car feels brisk rather than fast (with 1000 miles on the clock, I'm hoping it loosens up), and whilst the ride is more supple than you would expect, the pay-off is a fair amount of body roll when cornering. The handling is free of nasties, but a little hoppity around the bumpy country roads I use daily suggesting the optional 18" wheels may be a wise choice (I didn't!).
The car's best trait is its superb refinement. A distant throatiness is all you'll hear under acceleration, and once cruising, mechanical noise disappears totally. The downside is that when using the DSG box in manual, there simply are not enough audible clues; one has to keep eyes peeled on the rev ocunter. Auto mode is lazy and smooth though it's quite possible to catch it out, reluctant as it sometimes is to kick down. The car's fearsome thirst for Premium Unleaded keeps me out of Sport mode. Reviews suggest 30 mpg is easily attainable - but I can't get anywhere near that despite a restrained right foot. Coupled with a small tank, it has a very restricted range (especially after my last car - a Focus TDCi which could manage 500 miles on one tank).
Rarely has a car been launched with such praise and hype. I am disappointed with mine. The build quality is suspect, there are many poorly thought out design points, and my dealer is simply appalling.
The price that VW are charging for this car is simply not justified.
I wish I'd waited for the Alfa 159...
