1.6 SE Auto 5dr Hatchback

I am so disappointed! I've only done 50k miles in it, and by 25k I had to replace: driver's electric window, music centre, a/c, central arm rest, and fuel management system! It is also very thirsty.

This is the 7th car that I have owned. The other cars ranging from a Pug 306 too a Subaru Impreza Sport. Out of all of these cars I'd have to say the GTI T is the best of the lot. If you cant get comfortable in the seats then there is something clearly wrong with you, there are lots of different settings.
Build quality as you'd expect from a Vw is fantastic. Acceleration very quick. I cannot find a fault with this car. I have managed to get as a general rule kicking around 350 miles to a tank even with some hard acceleration...
If your thinking about buying one, go for a test drive ... im fairly certain you will fall in love with it... I did...

I agree with Euan, regardless of adjustments, I can just not get comfortable in my Golf! Either the steering wheel is too close but the pedals are too far away, or the steering is too far away and the pedals are too close. Also the steering on mine is s***. There is so much play its unreal, i dont know if anyone else has this problem... Also does anyone else find the gears crunch now and again. The Recaroes also get in the way of changing gear

In general this car is good and I have had no problems with it for the 2 years I have owned it.
My only gripe would be that I just can't find a seating position that is comfortable.

If you can't get a comfortable driving position you are very odd. I've never seen so much adjustment.

My 02 plate Golf GT TDI 130 is a fantastic car to drive, and you do feel safe in it. It is one of the few cars where you get performance and economy. It's also very reliable.
If you're thinking of buying one, shop around for one that has all the toys like climate control and cruise control.
Servicing and parts are expensive; and my advice is avoid the long-life service - it seems to last the same time as a normal service and costs 50% more. And if you're not bothered about the badge, buy a SEAT Leon - it's essentially the same car but cheaper because Golf prices are a lot higher than price guides suggest.

Have had to replace a pulley wheel in connection with timing belt, a brake light switch, back brake discs (x2) all within 70,000 miles. I expected more from a VW and I am a very easy driver.

Great looking car with lots of room. Air con, e/w, c/l and s/r all make it excellent value. However, this is the worst VW I have owned... It is the second I have bought from new and has been very disappointing. Brakes are awful, gearchange is notchy and it's had to go in a couple of times for minor things. Go for the Mark 3 - it's much better.

I've owned this car from new - 5 years and 2 months now. It has been the most reliable Golf I've ever owned (this is my seventh Golf!). It does 50+mpg. I've never had any problems that needed attention from the dealer - I've only paid for regular servicing and tyres. I've never even had to replace a bulb... Overall, very good.

Owned for 3 years; reliable apart from air mass meter, but most things work well. Comfortable although noisy on M roads. Not cheap to run, and depreciation has been higher than I was led to believe.
