2.0 GTI 8v

Compared to the Mk I and Mk II GTi's, the Mk III version doesn't live up to the badge in 2.0 8-valve form. It's a sluggish performer with a harsh, crashy ride. Standard equipment is poor: sunroof and air con are optional extras, not standard. The 1998-onwards Astra and Focus are both better drives and are cheaper to buy. Build quality though is superb, and the GTI is still a class act with street cred. They hold their price well despite shortcomings. Truthfully they are valued above their ability.

I bought my Golf last September (2005). I owned the V5 Bora before this. In comparison the Golf is a quicker car by miles, more comfier and better road handling I cannot fault the Golf GTi one bit it's an awesome car and they still look the part. I do recommend putting uprated suspension on them and for you petrol heads a superchip is a must, wow what a difference. Stay away from the 1.4CL, how slow? But very reliable as all the Golfs. Overall a brill car and will keep it for many years to come. As the saying goes Golfs never die. Good tyres on the front are a must. By far the better Golf out of the bunch. In my opinion they tend to spoil these later cars a lot they all look the same.

I own a 1.9 TDi and it is without doubt the most reliable car for its age. The diesel engine keeps going and going with no problems to report at 150,000 miles.
