I loved the car, but in the year I had it: the head gasket went; the 'cat' colapsed into the exhaust; the ABS failed; both fanbelts snapped (simultaneously); it needed a new battery and a new alternator; and every time I went through a puddle it cut out and wouldn't restart until it had dried out (20mins)...

The coupe looks really good and sounds great. Performance is good, but fuel economy suffers if driven hard. Much faster than the 1.9dCi. Look for one with full leather, and buy from a dealer.

Well pleased with this car apart from the common trouble of coil packs packing up causing a misfire. But smooth, enjoyable car to drive. Also brilliant performance and very comfortable.

Pleasant drive. Only complaints are the dashboard layout, many buttons and indicator lights are hidden to the taller driver by either the steering wheel or the hood to the speedometer, temp rev counter etc. Also not the most exciting of body designs. But other than these an all round good car.

Well I got mine in 2000 with 12K on the clock, The car has never let me down with starting. Been away for over 6 weeks and left it sitting in brutal weather in airport long term carpark it always started first turn of the key. Had to buy a few parts which were expensive. The Catalyzer packed in which cost me the guts of 500 Euro to replace and the rest of the exhaust system cost the same again months later. Head light replacement was 200 euro and both front fogs were 120 euro each, so be prepared to fork out for Renault parts. Inside, theres plenty of space for 2 people, you'll squash a couple more in the back, but I mean 'squash' the little boot will take a couple of medium sized suitcases as well. The Layout if the dash is okay but hard to find the hazard lights when you thank that guy for pulling in to let you overtake and hard to see the speedo as it's blocked by the steering wheel. The solenoids on the back windows burned out and the passenger door failed to open with the remote locking in very damp weather. Fuel consumption was great, but it drank a little when ran over 60mph. A full tank to this day lasts me for 400 miles which I think is pretty ok for a car with 100k on the clock. Nice stock stereo as well, never needed to change it. All in all, it's been a trusty little car, fun to drive and quick to boot.

I think this car is incredible. There is nothing on the road that could outdo a Megane - just sheer power.

I think the Megane despite poor press & reliabilty reports, has been a comfortable, spacious & very quick car. What has spoiled it was to replace numerous coils (would advise to change all 4,even if 1 goes). Regardless, a car which has a lot of extras over similar, more expensive cars. If not fussed about the Renault name - would recommend -but be aware of the faulty coils!!
