A simple story, good handling kept in check by standard ESP,good performance but the engine must be worked quite hard, comfort could be better for the driver but the seats perch you high. for rear passengers space is tight and the boot is smallish. Trim and fittings are ok - just equipment is very good. Service the 172 and it should not go wrong, 72000 mile services cost the earth, over a grand at Renault! See, I said it was a simple story...

I like the car but it is not good on long journies and has let me down a lot. The worst thing about the car are the electrics they just kept going wrong. I have had the car for 3 years (2 years were under warranty) and the car has been to 4 different garages 11 times and all bar one visit was electrical faults. The car is working now but is still showing 12 faults on the EMC. It is a cheap car and I have found out why!

All round good car. Excellent safety features. Only problem is the interior, and the sunroof rattles. Apart from that will buy a Clio again.

What can I say!!! Stonking performance from such a little gem - goes around corners with charismatic flair - (yeah right) - goes around corners like no other hatchback in the same category as this. (Civic Type R, Astra VXR, Focus ST -one category up)
Equipment levels are astonishing too - what car can you buy today that has so many features - such as xenons, auto wipers - which will be out of place from some prestige brands, such as BMW, Mercedes etc.
Overall - unbelievably good value for money. Well after all it is in a compact package!

1.2 3dr Authentique

We had a 2002 '52' 1.2 Authentique, which we bought new. The demo which we had test driven had more power than the one we were supplied, but Renault found no fault.
The car has the worst turning circle that we have ever come across; the seats became uncomfortable after a few miles; and there wasn't enough power to pull you out of bed! I have since driven the 16v and dCi, both of which have a lot more power (but still suffer the awful turning circle).
Our car went through two manual gearboxes, three water leaks, two sets of tyres in 6000 miles and was thankfully written off by our insurance company after being hit by drunk driver!!!
Our car was maybe the first to be built after the Christmas party??? We have bought two other French cars since, that appear to be have been built after the festive period.
Save yourself the possible headache and avoid the base model. Go for the 1.5 dCi, as you will get cheap insurance, road tax for just £50 per year, and save a fortune on fuel!
