Poor handling and very loud noise at high speed, not much room inside good for a first time buy though.

I got this as a first car and it has been ultra reliable. It starts every time and when you put your foot down it goes some. I have had it up to 116mph but that was downhill and at the complete limit. I would say though, that any potential buyer would have to watch out for electrics and bulbs on the dash as they have a habit of going, and are a nightmare to replace. Also with the 1.4 litre, the running costs arent that good, i can get about 270-290 miles from a full £40 tank!

Low parts and running costs with good reliability meant a great little run around. Not the fastest at the lights or on the motorway though.

This car is the most fun to drive since the Peugeot 104ZS. It looks so innocuous, but get the revs up above 3500 and it has no trouble keeping up with the big boys. it also corners and stops very well indeed. Reliability is good, too, provided you do your regular checks. Sliding-type sunroof will leak if seal not regularly treated with silicon grease and, like all Clio Mk Is, the body will rust where petrol spills wash away the protective wax below the filler.

I bought Clio last month for my wife to get hand on car as a learnning driver, the car is in good condition, although it had 4 previous owner. Clio is a kind of value for money but lack of severe quality & reliability and handling compartively to its compitetor i.e Ford Fiesta, Corsa and Nissan Micra. The car have done 44K on clock, black, CD & R Reg but have seriously flaws in design and handling, previous owner have spent loads of money on brakes, clutch, MOT and central locking but still problem pops up. Honestly, car have sun roof but it doesn't shut properly, and all left over rain water pours on me whenever i drove after rain (how annoying is that) I would strongly urge those buyer who are planning to buy used Clio (91-98) please be carefull with Renault (any make)!
