A good allrounder with exellent spec for age ie aircon and auto wipers. Interior trim becomes increasingly rattly and detached in places and if suspension bushes are not maintained it quicky developes an aray of thuding noises. Overall for the running cost and reliability a very good car.

I don't know what everyone has against 1.4s :) but I find the car a very good one. Despite the small engine the acceleration and response time are very impresseive, a lot stronger than other 1.6 and 1.8 cars. And what's even better is that with this great power doesn't come high fuel consumption, on the contrary! It is very economical. Grip is great. Great car.

306 turbo diesel

For nineties turbo diesel this car was fantastic. It would overtake better than many hot hatches on paper did 60 in 12 secs but because of the decent amount of boast it offered great overtaking if preplanned. It also handled like a sports car. I could not believe how good this car was when I drove it I bettered all my times on the twisty Kelso roads I could sleep for 4 more minutes. It was a bit uncomfortable on long journeys of more than 4 hours. The interor was fragile with things would just come of. I punched the door once gently and the window mechanism broke because it just plastic runners. I used to hit the door as hard as I could in my Escort and Astra and Audi and the window worked fine. In the Peugoet I could have broken it entirly. It did ok miles per gallon would probably have done great but I liked playing on the boast.

A great five-door hatch. Lots of legroom; corners beautifully; very comfortable; LX models have loads of extras. A nice family car.

1.9 TD LX

The 1.9 TD LX lives up to my expectations of a 306. Having had an early version non turbo diesel I prefer the 1998 version LX; however fuelwise I obviously get 50-100 miles less per tank with the TD, but it's worth it for the level of comfort.

Ticks most of the boxes depending what you want - sound all round performer. Economical - still 52mpg @ 65k miles, good handling with plenty of mid-range power for overtaking
