I'm 6' 2", 17 stone and need a big car with a large engine to move me about. So why did I buy a Space Star?
Having driven Volvos, Jaguars etc for years, when I retired I wanted something cheap to run, easy to service, with loads of room inside and easy access for my disabled wife.
Boy, was I surprised by the Space Star. It's not the largest outside, it's certainly not the fastest, but for comfort, unbelievable room inside and cheap to run, it's the best in its class. The only fault is the unbelievably high taxation class - it's in the top whack road fund tax band, which is total robbery for a vehicle with a 1.6 litre engine!
On the road it handles OK (whoever said it doesn't must be judging it against a Ferrari). Having driven competitively on road, track and off-road over many years in the past, I found it to be an adequately safe and competent vehicle, with good steering and ace brakes.
Inside is satisfactory - not Rolls standard but it has stood the test of time well over six years. It's comfy, roomy, with excellent folding sliding rear seats and good storage all round - front, back and boot.
The only minor issue is tyre noise - it has been said that Space Stars suffer from it. Don't buy cheap tyres - it's surprising what a difference it makes if you get a good set.
Economy is good - mine has given a genuine 36.9 miles per gallon on average since the day I bought it, and that's with a bit of pottering around town and a lot of lead footed dashing down the M1. If you don't want to risk the blue light behind you, you should be able to get just over 40mpg - but I'm not that old yet!
Look at one, try it and see. I hope you'll agree that Space Star ticks a lot of boxes.
