I have owned this car for two months now, so the initial honeymoon period is over and the vehicle has to stand on its own merits. The motoring press seem unable to pigeonhole exactly what type of car the Outlander is. Most criticise that it is not the best 4x4, not the best estate and generally mediocre. For my lifestyle the fact that it is not a huge SUV that's difficult to park or a delicate saloon car suits me very well. The build quality is, as always with Mitsubishi, very good. It is still early days but it can be anticipated that the reliability will be excellent. The elevated driving position gives a good view of the road and there are no significant blind-spots around the vehicle. The large door mirrors are particularly useful. The cabin interior is simple but effective and the seats remain comfortable even on long trips. Noise levels are generally low once underway. The 2.4 litre petrol engine has been returning an average of 24 mpg over a daily commuting distance of 7 miles each way along country lanes. Perhaps a bit on the heavy side but not greatly so unless compared to a pure economy vehicle in a different class. It certainly drinks less than its petrol powered bigger brother, the Shogun. Engine noise is noticeable during acceleration but once you have got the 1.5 tonne vehicle moving and can back off on the accelerator it quietens down dramatically. Engine noise has not proven to be an irritation. The Tiptronic gearbox could do with a 5th gear but if you use it in manual mode you can overcome any flat spots in performance caused by over-gearing. However the Outlander is not designed as a performance car and automatic mode is more than adequate for day to day family driving. Rear loading space is good for most family load-lugging tasks. If you want to move large pieces of furniture on a regular basis then buy a van. In summary, this is my first purchase of a 4x4 and so far I am very impressed. I did not want the incumberence of a big SUV but did want the increased safety of 4 wheel drive and reasonable load carrying ability. The Outlander achieves this and provides good comfort levels at the same time. A satisfied customer.
