C220 CDi classic (1999 manual)

I bought my C Class when it had 150,000 miles on the clock. Believe me, this is nothing for a diesel Mercedes - it's still a teenager! It goes without saying that these cars are built to last; the interior is in excellent condition as is the paintwork. Although mine is a basic Classic model, it's well equipped with auto one-touch windows all round, air con, ASR, auto mirrors, alloy wheels and lots of other nice touches.
The drive is very smooth, and whilst not as sporty as a BMW for example, it feels bombproof and re-assuring, just like a Mercedes should do. However, it is a little slow off the mark sometimes, especially in cold weather; but on the open road and the motorway it has bags of power. I have often been comfortably cruising along and then looked at the speedo which to my surprise has read 90 mph - that's the sign of a good saloon, going fast without straining the engine etc. I drove from Manchester to London last week and comfortably averaged around 90mph.
My biggest criticism with the car is that it's manual and not automatic. If you have the choice always go for the automatic! This isn't only because Mercedes are always best as automatics, it's because with the footbrake is next to the clutch, brake and accelerator - and things get far too crowded. Although I think the footbrake replacing the handbrake is a good idea and would work great with an auto gearbox, four pedals is just too much - when lifting the clutch, I feel that my foot is often brushing against other pedals.
Apart from this I think it's a great car. It looks very elegant in black - I may consider tinted windows to complete the look (at the risk of impersonating a drug dealer!). There are lots of nice little touches that you might not find in other brands of car such as the first aid kit etc, and a button on the dashboard that makes the rear headrests drop to improve vision when reversing.
But with all great marques, the best thing about it is having that three pointed start on the end of the bonnet and on your keyring.

My car has covered 73,000 miles and still feels taut and responsive. I am very pleased overall, the ride is good, cabin layout and specification is excellent. I have had the car 18 months and have nothing to complain about. Legendary build quality, prestige and feel good factors are all present in spades. Servicing can be pricey, but routine maintenance is relatively fuss free. There is a small issue of low power delivery at low revs although the quality feel is never compromised. Given the reasonable price I paid, I can honestly say every journey is a pleasure and at time of writing the car hasn't dropped a stitch. Definitely worth every penny, this coupled with a certain air of exclusivity. My first Mercedes has been a success story. Go for Elegance trim, auto a must, silver colour and enjoy.

A fantastic car, as long as you're prepared to spend a bit of money on repair bills. However, DO NOT buy unless with an automatic gearbox, as manual ones are terrible. C180 is a bit slow, so be prepared to press the accelerator a little harder. Or consider the C220 diesel, which will give you better performance and fuel economy. But despite these remarks, this car is still nearly faultless.

Mine is W-reg with high miles, but with a faultless engine. ABS & ESP are standard, both are essential safety features. High speed stability is good, so is acceleration. Fuel economy: worst 34 mpg in town, best 49 on the motorway.
