Good looking, inexpensive to buy and run, reliable, comfortable, quick, well equipped, versatile load space. All-in-all, very highly recommended. I shall be buying another one in a year or so.

A rational purchase for the family. Love the site by the way - it's far better than others.

1.8 Zetec & 2.0 Ghia

Overall Rating

I've had two of these. The 1.8 Zetec was my favourite though the 2.0 Ghia was a bit quicker higher up the rev range. The suspension setup is better on the Zetec - more fun handling-wise. The softly sprung Ghia made rear seat passenger a bit car sick. Running costs okay, 1.8 better than 2.0. Servicing very cheap even from the main dealer. Rear light seals seemed a bit iffy on mine and I had quite a few problems with tail and indicator lights blowing caused by water ingress. Loads of space, these are much bigger than other cars in the class and the hatch was much more useful than the saloon. Front tyres didn't last long - 6000 miles and I found that the alloys didn't seal with the tyres very well so frequent visits to the air pump to check the pressures. Even for the few irritations I had, I still enjoyed owning both cars and with prices on them now so low, Mondeo is definitely worth considering.

2.0 GLX

I've owned a 1999 2.0 GLX for four years now. I bought it with 9500 miles on, then used it for motorway driving every day, averaging 100 miles a day. It now has 130,000 miles on it and drives pretty much the same as when I bought it. Has only let me down twice: one of those was only a new battery; the other new HT leads. Routine maintenance, a couple of rear brake discs and that's about it. Brilliant car - reliable and cheap to run.
