This car has been a major disapointment - it was purchased as a replacement for a 1997 523i SE which was an awesome car and still felt great at 165K. As I was doing a higher mileage for work than when I brought the 523i I started looking at diesel cars. I purchased the 320d with 70K on the clock (Full Main Dealer History) as clearly the car had been looked after (was pretty much immaculate). First impressions were good - felt like a smaller version of the 5 series. After owning it for a few weeks the niggles started to emerge, the car had some funny blips in acceleration at 2-3K rpm also at random intervals it would go into 'Limp Mode', the door seals creak badly and the seat was v.uncomfortable on long journeys. I tried to get these faults fixed by the supplying dealer but when they had the car they could never reproduce the faults descibed (or didn't want to). The warranty expired and the problems remained (+ a faulty radio and bulb warning lamp on dashbord). A few months later the Turbo blew resulting in a £1000+ bill. Searching around on the internet the above are all very commmon faults on 320d's (there a plenty more big problems waiting to happen snapped springs, swirl flaps being eaten by the engine, wishbone bushes, Mass air flow meters etc. etc.) - I have lost confidence in the car and will sell it as soon as I have saved enough money up to swap it ! I would expect better quality from BMW (I have previously owned 5 others) and this has put me off buying another (I may try a Japanese car next) If you buy one of these cars I would suggest taking out an additional warranty to protect you against major failures.
