Was looking for an economical smallish hatch/saloon, VW golf sort of thing. This had just been part-exed and was on the forecourt unvaleted. Took it out for a drive. Was blown away by the power and torque from the engine and subsequently purchased the car. Have been delighted with it ever since. Engine still going strong at 120,000, and clutch and gear box. Only problem is finding something to replace it - think it will have to be another A4!

This was the worst car I ever owned. I had a 2001 model and it had many problems. First, the a/c never worked well. Second, the electric system that operates the windows was a joke. Evey time I rolled up my window, it came right back down. Third, the car had horrible lag when you press the accellerator. This almost caused an accident a few times because I could not get out of the way of an oncoming car. Finally, the car is uncomfortable to drive. You don't feel safe in it since it follows all of the lines ad bumps in the road. You're constantly jerking all over the place. Oh one more thing, the interior buttons are coated with a paint-like substance that peels off and warranty does not cover it since it happens to ALL of them and they don't want to keep shelling out money to fix it! When I met my boyfriend, I begged him to switch cars with me and I drove his Honda Accord and LOVED IT! He always wanted his car back, but I wouldn't give it to him because I hated that Audi. The only plus from the Audi is that it's a cute car. Everything else sucks!

This is an amazing car! I've had it over a year now - it's a 2000 model with 49,000 miles, but still looks and drives like new. Highly recommended - I would not be without one.

A superb car very solid big over enginnered quaility felt more like a merc. Unbelivable fuel economy better any other car I have owned which includes 3 other diesels and 2 1 litre petrols. No creaking or noises and everything worked beutifully had a real quailty precison enginnnered feel to it. It was not amazingly fast but offered good overtaking ability and for a car of its size weight and era offered very good performance almost unbelivable for a car with a lot of weight and not that much power felt like it had a better ratio than it did.
It handled like most Audis - badly - understeering on the wrong side of the road but did not snap so as long so was easy to recover as long as there was enough road space. A6 is just a tarted up 80 very little tart.

I've had the car now (2000 model) for about a year and the fuel economy still amazes me. It's showing 52 mpg average at the moment and the car's done 90,000 miles. I've never needed to put in a drop of oil outside its service.
Power is good and overtaking is a breeze, even in top gear. The interior is superior to the equivalent Beemers - I was in a new BMW only a few weeks back and I think the Audi is superior by a good margin.
It's hard to comment on handling when you've not driven all the other cars, but I still feel fresh after a long drive in the A4 and I've never had a car that's done that before.
I've noticed that some reviews talk about the brakes having too much servo - not me, as after a while it makes it easier to drive. The stereo/6CD player is really good and the boot is massive.
If you're thinking of getting one then don't worry about highish miles, as these engines could easily go round the clock twice if looked after. Besides, it would be hard to thrash this engine as it makes its power (and loads of torque) low down in the rev range. I would say a full Audi service history is a must, but most are anyway.

I've now owned my 1998(S) since December 2004 and it never fails to please. I've now covered over 40,000 miles in that time and have only had to replace the mass flow meter. It still pulls like a train, with 191,000 miles on the clock and uses no oil or water between (6000-mile) services. Best of all, I can still hit 60mpg with it on long runs! Even on my daily commute from Lincolnshire to Huntingdon (a 90-mile round trip) it returns 55mpg without fail. Towing my 1300kg Bailey Pageant caravan to Scotland last year showed over 30mpg. Why would I want to replace it for something newer...?
