Multi purpose vehicles sales reach four year high

Dealers are being advised to stock up on big MPV's to cope with increasing demand.

Analysts at Vehicle Remarketing Solutions believe the market in larger MPV's such as Renault Grand Scenic is growing and is at its strongest since 2003. This will strengthen this summer as buyers are attracted to more spacious and comfortable forms of transport.

Lewis Arthur, managing director, says his company has seen increased interest from dealers. "It seems that the rise in car tax has pushed retail demand away from 4x4's. Although this propensity for larger vehicles has remained with buyers turning their attentions to alternatives such as MPV's," he says.

Arthur believes dealers are ideally positioned to capitalise as they "have a free hand" in selecting vehicles for the forecourt.

2003 MPV % of total sales 3.74%, MPV growth - 3.21%

2004 MPV % of total sales 13.97%, MPV growth - 5.81%

2005 MPV % of total sales 33.28%, MPV growth - 11.18%

2006 MPV % of total sales 38.60%, MPV growth - 13.22%
