Vauxhall Movano (1999-03)

Overall Rating

3 stars

The S40 doesn't cut it as an alternative to the Audi A4 or BMW 3-Series, but it is a step up from a Mondeo or Vectra. It's well equipped, roomy, good to drive and surprisingly affordable. With a four-star crash test rating, it's very safe for its age, too.

For
  • Spacious, safe, high quality family wheels
  • Lots of equipment on top models
  • Lots of room for four adults, big boot
Against
  • Latest S40 makes this one look dated
  • Less of a driver's car than 9-3 or 3-Series
  • 2.0T and T4 have high running costs
Road Test

What S40 lacks in pizzazz it makes up for in comfort. The driving position is excellent with plenty of adjustment, a clear view of the road and user-friendly controls. All passengers get seats supportive enough for long trips and the boot is capable of holding several suitcases. The entry-level 1.6 is sluggish, though 1.8 and 2.0 models offer a good turn of speed. 2.0T and T4 models are powerful and have revisions to make them better to drive. The four diesels are plodders - only the 1.9 with 115bhp is worth considering. The S40 range is surprisingly large and there's plenty of choice. Cars with Comfort, Audio, Winter and Luxury packs have added kit and are worth seeking out. Early cars suffered terrible build quality and are best avoided. Most of the issues were resolved by 2000 and equipment was improved too, so go for the latest car you can.
