Liana was designed to take on the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra with quirky styling, a high specification and a roomy interior. It missed by a mile and sales were disappointing. But it's not a bad car and used prices making it a tempting family buy.
For
- Inexpensive family hatchback
- New prices are usually discounted
- 1.6 16v engine is lively and very reliable
Against
- Depreciates quickly
- Suffers from lack of image
- Rivals are more refined
Road Test
The lack of a diesel in the range is a major drawback. The 1.6 is the only on offer and it's too thirsty for the average buyer, yet not quick enough for those looking for more performance. Not that Liana could handle any more power: it rolls through corners has imprecise steering and has a poor ride.
Cars from 2005 benefit from a refreshed interior, but still isn't up to the standards set by Ford, Vauxhall and Toyota. There's a good view of the road and a comfortable driving position and a reasonable boot, but it lacks the flexibility offered by small people carriers. There's little point in choosing the less practical and more ungainly saloon version.
Liana is cheap to buy, though, proved itself reliable and is fairly cheap to run. The dealer network is an average size, but generally offers affordable servicing.
