Suzuki Ignis (2000-)

Overall Rating

3 stars

Ignis is a small car that's available as a three- or five-door hatchback. It has never been a big seller, but does offer good value for money, lots of space for its size and excellent reliability.

For
  • Good all-round vision
  • Easy to drive and park
  • Lively for its size
Against
  • Not much legroom for rear passengers
  • Loses value quite quickly
  • Cheap interior trim and upholstery
Road Test

There are 1.3 and 1.5 engines, though the 1.3 is willing enough for most buyers. 4Grip versions are best avoided unless you must have four-wheel-drive; they're heavier, thirstier and slow. All three-doors have 1.3 engines, with the exception of the rally-inspired 1.5 Sport, which was available for a short time with Recaro seats and a bodykit. Its compact shape, large windows and comfortable driving position make it easy to drive around town. It's acceptable to drive on the motorway, too, though the 1.3 engine can feel strained on longer trips. The boot is large and 60:40 split folding rear seats provide a useful load area. A facelift in 2005 brought a much-improved interior. Running costs are on a par with alternatives such as the Ford Fusion and Mazda 2. Fuel consumption and servicing is good, while insurance is reasonable. Reliability has been excellent.
