Skoda Superb (2002-06)

Overall Rating

4 stars

Superb represents lots of roomy car for the money, with high specification levels and a comfortable ride. Some may have problems with this badge on an executive car, but it's smart and sophisticated.

For
  • Far cheaper than Passat or upper-medium saloons
  • Very roomy cabin with an excellent ride
  • Good equipment for the money
Against
  • Skoda badge lacks credibility at exec level
  • Handling is less precise than Passat
  • High depreciation on top models
Road Test

An executive car with a Skoda badge now deserves serious consideration. Based on the Passat, Superb it is larger and even roomier. It's a car built for comfort rather than speed, but it's still satisfying to drive quickly. That said, Superb should be driven smoothly and maturely, so that occupants can properly enjoy the well-finished interior. They can stretch out in the back and enjoy the high level of standard equipment. Up front the driving position is spot-on, with controls falling easily to hand. The simple-to-adjust seat means that the driver stays comfortable. Overall Superb is not the total executive experience that some would expect. Choosing the larger petrol engines is harder to justify than opting for the excellent Volkswagen turbodiesel units which can return almost 50mpg. Running costs compared to other cars in this class are a highly attractive feature. Superb costs less at the outset, and it will cost less to own.
