Proton Impian (2001-)

Overall Rating

2 stars

Impian is a rare sight on the road. A tiny dealer network means finding one is difficult and they're expensive to buy new - despite being made by a budget car manufacturer. Ride and handling are good, but the 1.6 engine is rough and the interior finish lags behind today's standards.

For
  • Comfortable, well equipped family-sized wheels
  • Discounted new prices, low used values
  • Nice to drive with good handling and ride
Against
  • Little image and no hatchback version
  • 1.6 engine works hard and sounds harsh
  • Steep depreciation if bought new
Road Test

Proton started life as a low cost car-maker importing to the UK. However, the Impian is aimed at more upmarket family buyers and it simply can't compete against the likes of the Skoda Octavia and Toyota Corolla. Although standard equipment is very good, the high price puts it in the same bracket as much better cars, with more image and proven pedigree. The 1.6 is the only engine option and it performs well - handling is not so impressive. The interior is bland and cheap-looking too. If you must buy a Proton, the Wira saloon costs less and goes as well.
