The latest 406 replaces the long overdue previous 406 which is showing signs of old age. The new saloon may have a smaller cabin and only an average-sized boot but the company hopes that will be less significant to potential owners than powerful engines and driver appeal. The latest rival for the Vectra and Mondeo has remarkable road-holding, although it is not the most involving drive. Some buyers may not like that gaping front grille but you can't deny it gives the 407 a serious image boost. The 136bhp 2.0 HDi engine is pick of the bunch - and it may get the same 2.7 diesel as the S-Type.
