Nissan Patrol (1998-)

Overall Rating

3 stars

The Patrol is a proper off-roader that can truly go anywhere and do anything. Big engines and heavy controls mean it can be a bit of a brute as an everyday car, although luxury-packed recent models are much easier to live with.

  • Relaible and good running costs for it's size
Against
  • Outdated looks
  • Not suited for town driving

Road Test

Patrol isn't cheap to buy, but it is a well built and good spec product. Earlier cars are powered by a 2.8 turbodiesel, while later cars have a 3.0. Both units are crude, but powerful and ideal for towing or off-road work. Space isn't a problem in Patrol, so there's plenty of room in the rear for three and an impressive amount of load space. The driving position is good and there's a commanding view of the road. Once up to speed, Patrol cruises well, but getting there can be hard work: it rolls a lot, the steering is vague and the gearchange is heavy-handed. It's heavy in town and difficult to park. The heavy duty plastics in the cabin cope easily with heavy use, while breakdowns are unheard of -that's why Patrol is deployed to war zones worldwide. Go for an SE to get air con and a CD autochanger.
