Mitsubishi Shogun Sport (2001-)

Overall Rating

2 stars

Shogun Sport is a great off-roader but a bit of a relic. Although it's decent off road and very reliable, it lags behind on every other front. It's cramped, uncomfortable, slow and poorly finished outside.

For
  • Tough, roomy and reliable family 4x4
  • Good off-road capability; 2.5 TD is a strong tow car
  • Lots of used car for the money
Against
  • Elderly design and technology
  • Ride lacks refinement and it's noisy
  • Not much fun to drive with vague steering
Road Test

The 2.5TD is the only engine worth considering. Latest engines are best; they have 115bhp instead of 100bhp. The 3.0 V6 is rarer on the used market, more expensive to run and thirsty. Neither are quick and can be painfully slow on the motorway. But when it comes to off-roading, it's unquestionably talented, with a low ratio gearbox and plenty of ground clearance. Despite its size, Shogun Sport is actually quite cramped inside. The driving position is awkward, visibility isn't great and there's surprisingly little load space. Unlike more modern rivals, the seats do not fold flat, limiting its practicality. Running costs are high for this type of car: it needs frequent servicing, dealers can be expensive and the cost of repair means insurance is high. It's robust, though, and reliability is good. The car was sold between 1998-2001 with a similar spec under as Challenger.
