Isuzu Trooper (1998-04)

Overall Rating

3 stars

This is a 4x4 for serious work and off-road use. It's powerful and tough but dated and unrefined, so it doesn't compete with Shogun or Discovery.

For
  • Durable, enduring and respected as a workhorse
  • Five-door is very roomy with good load space
  • Proven technology has high reliability record
Against
  • An old design; cabin is very dated
  • Ride lacks refinement, handling lacks poise
  • V6 models struggle to give 20 mpg
Road Test

Plus points are reliability, sturdy build quality, durability and loyal owners - mainly country people rather than suburban 4x4 poseurs. It's great off-road, especially the SWB. But steering is very heavy, and its bulk means it's certainly not agile or easy to drive. Of the 3.5 V6 petrol and the straight-six 3.0 turbo-diesel, the latter is stronger, more fuel efficient and generally preferred. However the V6 petrol is much livelier and also smoother. Three-door SWB models are more manageable to drive and seat five. Five-door LWB models accommodate up to seven but compromise on load space. There are trims and specifications to suit all needs, from basic (IStandard) to reasonably comprehensive (Citation), so check that the car you're interested in has the kit you need. Trooper is good value if you accept its utilitarian nature and lack status, and if you're not too fussy about ride comfort.
