Ford Focus (2004-08)

Overall Rating

4 stars

Ford could have been bolder on the styling, but engineers were spot on making it fun to drive. The Focus still combines fantastic driving experience with family practicality. A sound used buy, look around for the best spec model you can get for your money.

  • Extensive range of engines and trims
  • Used cars cheap to buy and run
  • Finally seats 5 properly
  • Some might consider looks bland
  • Be prepared to blend in
  • Front door and boot seals prone to leak
Road Test

Passenger space in the rear has been increased, and the middle seat well padded. The expensive suspension system ensures the kids in the back don't get thrown around too much if you prefer to drive, shall we say, with a bit of energy. If you've never driven one, definitely take a test drive. Gears are lighter, steering feels sharp and precise, and road noise is minimal. Estate carries up to 1,525 litres of cargo, but the hatch will undoubtedly be the top selling model. Petrol engines range from 1.4 to 2.0, and there are three diesel engines - 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0. The 2.0 TDCi comes with 6 speed gearbox while all others are 5 speed. Basic studio trim has electric windows and mirrors. LX adds aircon, Zetec has sports styling and an upgrade in suspension. Ghia has additional climate control, cruise control, automatic wipers and headlights. Top Titanium model oddly does not have cruise control but has sports seats in partial leather. Optional extras include leather seats, rear-mounted DVD player and rear sun blinds for the kids, and satnav for the grown ups. From 2008 all models gained ESP, and the Zetec S was introduced with additional sporty spoilers and 17" alloy wheels.
