Fiat Ulysse (2003-05)

Overall Rating

4 stars

Ulysse Mk 2 deserves a new name it's so much better than the old car. It's big on space, comfort and refinement, it's stylish despite its size, and it's attractively priced.

For
  • A big step up from the previous Ulysse
  • Roomy, comfortable, very safe, good to drive
  • Lots of equipment; good storage space
Against
  • Depreciation may be a problem if bought new
  • Limited load capacity with all seats in use
  • Ride is jittery at lower speeds
Road Test

Ulysse is the close cousin of the Citroen C8 and Peugeot 807. It beats Galaxy/Sharan on space and price, coming close to Previa for style and generous equipment. It's among the safest MPVs. The 807 achieved five Euro NCAP stars; Ulysse, with similar safety features, should match it. The airy cabin offers a wide choice of layouts up to eight seats if you go for a third row bench. Sliding rear doors (electrically operated at extra cost) make rear access easy and are a boon when loading up. But luggage space is restricted with all seats in place. Driving the Ulysse, it doesn't feel as big as it looks. Steering is accurate, roadholding is good, and there's not too much body roll. The ride is forgiving, contributing to low noise levels. Turbodiesel power is preferred, with the 128bhp 2.2 JTD well matched to the big body and giving nearly 40mpg.
