Fiat Stilo (2002-)

Overall Rating

3 stars

Stilo was developed specifically to rival the Golf, but Fiat didn't manage to match the German class-leader when it comes to handling, quality, comfort or desirability. It's a lot cheaper, though.

For
  • Good value
  • Above-average ride and refinement
  • Plenty of room even in three-door cars
Against
  • Multiwagon estate is not popular
  • 1.2 engine works hard at higher speeds
  • Swift depreciation due to discounts on new cars
Road Test

The surprisingly conservative Stilo replaced the pretty Bravo/Brava/Marea ranges; it has none of their design flair and is not as rewarding to drive, either. Stodgy handling spoils an otherwise practical package, with a selection of good engines and well-equipped specification levels. It's hard to believe that the Stilo is the sister model to the much more dynamic and entertaining Alfa 147. Both the Focus and latest Astra are more fun. Still, it's good value for money, especially if you look away from the Fiat dealerships - car supermarkets regularly have pre-registered examples with delivery mileage at huge discounts - and model-for-model, comes up much cheaper than a Golf. Multiwagon estate versions are versatile and spacious. The JTD diesels are the most attractive options; the smaller petrol engines feel underpowered in such a bulky car, and 2.4 is superfluous in something that isn't really sporting. The troublesome and fiddly Selespeed clutchless gearbox is best avoided.
