Fiat 500 (2008-16)

Overall Rating

Fiat's 500 is the Italian rival to the MINI, small smart with plenty of flair.

  • Superb handling
  • Retro image
  • Quality interior with modern refinements
  • Performance is lacking
  • Fuel tank is small
  • Cramped Rear
Road Test

Almost twice the size of the original and modernised the re-born 500 still has some of the old qualities with the same boot, bonnet, mirrors and handles as well as the same shape with new features to bring it up to date. Choice of 12 exterior colours and 9 wheels and a huge list of accessories the 500 can be personalised to suit. Inside is high quality and modern with the latest Bluetooth and iPod compatibility and15 different interior upholstery to choose from. Rear legroom is a bit cramped but the seats go forward to give me boot space. Engines come in petrol - 1.2 litre 69bhp and 1.4 litre100bhp and a 1.3 turbo-diesel with 75bhp. A smooth ride which will zip around town and even hit speeds on the motorway but quick it isn't taking 13 seconds to achieve 62mph. A nifty feature is the automatic start if the engine stalls. The ride is fun with power steering, electronic safety features to control the brakes and chassis balance. Excellent road handling the 500 is agile around bends maximising comfort for passengers and easy to park due to its size. A fun small car with Italian flair that's stayed true to it's roots.
