IS offers sharp styling, sporty performance, excellent engines and high levels of fit and finish. However it's less refined and roomy than rivals, and its interior styling doesn't please everyone.

Road Test
This compact saloon gets a lot of things right, from its pretty styling to its sporty character. But some details leave it behind rival models, notably 3-Series.
The six cylinder engines are smooth, but the 2.0 litre doesn't have the power it really needs. At low speeds the engine is just not responsive enough and that means a lot of gear-changing through the six-speed gearbox. The larger 3.0 version is much better but it's rather thirsty, only managing 26mpg overall.
On the plus side, the handling is sharp and sporty. But the sporty drive means that the suspension set-up is firm, making it uncomfortable for some.
Inside, taller drivers may feel cramped, and the dashboard layout confuses some drivers with its small watchface-like dials. And the boot is on the smallish side.
Despite this, the generous equipment list persuades many buyers that this is the compact executive car for them.
