Fabulous to look at and so obviously American, although there is a Mercedes engine under the bonnet. Not as sporty to drive as its looks suggest, but still quite quick.
For
- German-American sports coupe looks great, goes well
- Mercedes 3.2 V6 engine; excellent roadholding
- Well constructed and generously equipped
Against
- Ride lacks refinement; responses could be sharper
- Chrysler has little heritage in this market
- US-style chrome grille is a bit brash
Road Test
This intriguing hybrid Euro-American coupe certainly grabs your attention. The combination of brash American styling and German engineering is certainly interesting and individualistic, but it's not entirely successful.
The Mercedes engine makes a wonderful noise and is very powerful, ensuring that it won't get left behind by the competition. Less good is the handling; and that's a shame, as this is meant to be a sports car. The steering seems vague and the car does not feel very assured when cornering at speed. Poor road surfaces also upset the handling all too easily.
Interior detailing is good, although some say that the seats are not supportive enough; and it can feel a little cramped if you're tall.
Using quality Mercedes engineering was a good idea, giving Crossfire credibility and ensuring reliability. Waiting lists for new cars mean that in the medium term the Crossfire ought to hold its value well.
