Alfa Romeo 156 (1998-06)

Overall Rating

4 stars

156 has been around since 1997; it was updated in 2003, receiving front end restyling and interior upgrades. It still looks elegant, either as a saloon and as a Sportwagon estate.

For
  • Perhaps the most stylish compact executive model
  • Lively engines and good grip enhance sporty character
  • Generous equipment levels
Against
  • Sportwagon is less roomy and practical than rivals
  • Hard ride and noise reduce occupant comfort
  • Higher depreciation and running costs than rivals
Road Test

The 156 has given Alfa, for the first time, a real contender in the upper-medium/compact executive market. Eye-catching to look at, rewarding to drive and better-made than the 155 it replaced, it has proved a big hit with those not keen on the default -option 3-Series, A4 and so on. With accurate steering and sharp reactions, the 156 makes its German rivals feel stodgy, but the downside is that ride quality and comfort is less impressive. The Sportwagon is no practical load -lugger, either although it boasts a useful tailgated boot, it actually has less luggage space than the saloon. The wide range includes the high-performance GTA and the fast and refined 2.4 JTD diesel, though the 2.0 JTS direct-injection petrol engine is a great all-rounder. Owning a 156 should be pleasurable as long as it remains reliable. It has scored poorly in many surveys, and reports suggest that Alfa dealers continue to be unsupportive.
